Stellar Introduces Dual-Mode ORBCOMM & GSM Product Series
DULLES, Va.- Stellar Satellite Communications Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of ORBCOMM Inc., today announced the introduction of the DS300-D and DS400 dual-mode ORBCOMM satellite and GSM communicators. The first to be commercialized is the DS300-D, which features expansion ports that allow the addition of external GSM and Zigbee wireless modules. The DS300-D will be followed shortly by the DS400, which incorporates GSM and Zigbee wireless communication devices and a DS100 satellite subscriber communicator in a single enclosure.
Where the DS300-D is designed mostly for high value asset tracking, the DS400 is specifically designed for heavy equipment and fleet management applications. The DS series of satellite subscriber communicators are the result of a joint engineering and manufacturing effort between Stellar and Delphi Electronics and Safety, which continues to produce reliable and cost effective products for the ORBCOMM market.
These new subscriber communicators bring together the global coverage of ORBCOMM’s low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite network with the higher-bandwidth capabilities of GSM cellular data networks. The dual-mode product line is an ideal choice for high-value M2M data communications applications that require ubiquitous coverage and high-throughput. Common to the line is the high reliability and low cost now associated with all Stellar products.

Where the DS300-D offers modular design and snap-on GSM and Zigbee modules, the DS400 combines the DS100 satellite subscriber communicator and a microprocessor board for third party applications with optional internal GSM and Zigbee modules. The DS400 is built to meet to demanding requirements of the heavy equipment industry and aims to satisfy the needs of customers ranging from OEMs and rental companies to construction companies.
Other manufacturers are also incorporating Stellar’s satellite subscriber communicators into their dual-mode solutions. The first of these products is the Vector 300 dual-mode communicator from Prolificx of New Zealand, which combines the Stellar DS100 with a GSM modem, GPS receiver and powerful Windows CE application processor in a rugged, compact enclosure. Additional dual-mode and multi-mode products that use the DS-series satellite subscriber communicators from Stellar are expected from other manufacturers in the coming year.
